No matter how skeptical you may be, you should never underestimate the power of positivity. Negativity is contagious, it spreads from person to person, bring each person down as they encounter it. On the flipside, positivity and positive thinking in general has been found to provide countless benefits which can be carried over into everyday life. We ourselves control our own lives and our own destiny, and if you adopt a positive outlook, your life and the lives of those around you, will be significantly improved. To help you do exactly that, we will now be taking a look at the modern rules of positivity, as we look at some golden rules to live by if you wish to adopt a positive mindset.
Distance yourself from negative individuals – As mentioned, negativity is contagious. Try to be the person who keeps the conversation and tone constructive and positive, and who keeps focused on useful things instead of waylaying a conversation with unhelpful things. Whenever possible, try to insulate yourself from negative individuals, focus on yourself, and try to either encourage or be unaffected by people that are in a worse place mentally than yourself at the moment.
Never measure your success against that of others – In society, we often find that people seem to compare their worth, and their own success, against that of others. If you measure your own success against that of others, you will never truly be happy. For example, a businessman could build a business from nothing and end up making $100,000 per year. To most, this is an incredible achievement. The problem however, is that the same businessman may read about how another guy in a similar situation to him, built an $200,000 per year business from nothing, in the exact same space of time. All of a sudden, in his own mind he is a failure because somebody out there is earning twice as much as him. If you wish to be happy and truly positive, you simply must focus on yourself, rather than comparing yourself to others. There will always be people who, on paper, are doing better than you, but that does not take anything away from what you have achieved and what you will achieve if you set your mind to it.
Always look for the positives – In life, there are positives which can be taken from pretty much anything, we simply need to know where to look. As an example, if you were planning a day in the countryside, only to find that it is raining on the morning of your proposed trip, rather than stewing in your own negativity and getting angry at the weather, try to look for the positives instead. Simply shrug your shoulders and plan a restful day inside, and simply reschedule for the following weekend. You may also be thankful for the rain, which will water and nourish your garden, meaning you don’t have to.
Bide your time – Adopting a positive outlook on life can be tough to begin with. Often it will require you to adjust your behavioural traits and patterns, which may come as a shock to the system. The thing to remember is to simply bide your time and wait. You will become a more positive person with each passing day, it simply takes time and consistency. Forgive yourself for rough periods and they too shall pass.
